During your journey to building your professional brand, you will need to create a space to showcase your work, and you as a professional in the video advertising industry. This can most easily be accomplished by creating a website where you can share your work and insights with the world. Today, we will look at a few tips to build a website using the experience I have gained building this website and the blog that you are reading right now!
Step 1: Target Audience
The first step in creating your website is to decide on what groups of people you want to share your message with. You want to be very specific about this aspect, as it will impact the rest of your process. You can check out my previous post for this here. For example, if you are creating a website to work as a portfolio for job placement, your audience will not be students, but professionals looking to hire employees, or individuals looking for freelance productions in your field. To make this process concise, consider the following:
What is your website saying?
Who are you trying to reach with your work?
What tone are you trying to convey?
Answering these questions will help you create a blueprint for creating your website content for your audience. If possible, try to conduct some form of user research about your audience to help you with these questions.
Step 2: Content
Now that you have your audience, you can move on to building the content for your website. This should be relevant information, such as your previous projects, current projects, information about yourself, and ways to connect with your audience, such as an email sign-up and social media platforms.
Step 3: User Experience
Once you have your audience and content, it is time to think about a vital aspect of a successful website- user experience. As the name suggests, user experience is the way that the viewer (or user) experiences your platform. This includes aspects such as layout, text, fonts, colors, images, navigation elements, etc. An effective way to do this is to take a look at some of the websites and platforms you visit and consider the following:
Is the navigation smooth?
What makes it easy to use?
How is the layout structured?
What text and colors work?
Most of the time, if you don’t have to think about the layout, that means the user experience design is working as it should! Take a moment to think about how you would like your website to look, and then ask someone you know to test it out and give you feedback about what works and what doesn’t. Feedback from others on user experience is one of the best ways to improve your design.
Conclusion
Building a website may seem like a daunting task at first, but following these steps will help you stay on track, and you will be well on your way to delivering professional and user-friendly content to your viewers.
